ジャン＝レオン＝ジェローム・フェリス(Jean Leon Gerome Ferris)は19世紀後半から20世紀前半に活躍した歴史画家。『The Pageant of a Nation』というアメリカの歴史を70枚以上の絵画で表現した連作で知られる。残念なことに、現在、作品の大半が個人所蔵になっていてThe Pageant of a Nationが一堂に会した機会は私の知る限り、今までで数回しかない。徹底的な調査に基づく精緻な描写は他者の追随を許さない。

『The Pageant of a Nation』から建国の父祖たちを描いた作品を抜粋。なお以下の画像は私が手持ちの資料からスキャンしたものなのでこれ以上、高画質で見られるサイトは他にない。

『The Pageant of a Nation』はワシントンを描いた作品が非常に多い。それにもかかわらず戦場で勇ましく戦うワシントンの姿は一枚もない。フェリスは多くの人々にワシントンを「平和の象徴」として見てほしかったのだ。そして、せめて絵の中でも安楽に過ごしてほしかったのだろう。ちなみにワシントンが亡くなるシーンはなく最後の誕生日で終わっている。

ハワード・パイル(Howard Pyle)は19世紀後半から20世紀初頭に活躍した偉大なイラストレーター。「アメリカのイラストレーションの父」と呼ばれる。National Museum of American Illustrationのページにはいろいろなイラストレーターが紹介されているから是非ともお気に入りのイラストレーターを探してみてほしい。今回、ここで紹介するのはハワード・パイルが描いた建国の父祖たち。画像は私の手持ちの資料からスキャンしたもので英語表記は原題。
